Case Study

Expanding capacity and optimizing efficiency at the redeveloped Royal Columbian Hospital.

At Forsyth we’re driven by the belief that positive impact can happen in the simplest of spaces. For us, it’s not about dollars in the door, it’s about helping our clients reimagine what healthcare spaces can do for end-users: providers and their patients.

Background & Objective

Time to grow.

With an ageing building and growing surrounding population, RCH is undergoing significant expansion and renovations. Among several reputable options, their redevelopment team tapped Forsyth Healthcare as their chosen vendor to outfit the new and updated facilities with a wide range of medical cart and storage solutions. This was thanks in no small part to RCH’s clinical teams requesting our involvement.

Challenges

Modernization amid change.

As a multi-phased redevelopment project, the procurement period was significant. This meant their project team experienced turnover over the duration of the project, and understandably, requirements shifted as a result. What remained constant, however, was their mandate for modernization of both spaces and patient care, and optimization of both through as much equipment standardization as possible.

Solutions

Every detail, and none too small.

Before making any product recommendations, our team met with key stakeholders from every department, from Emergency and Critical Care, to Logistics and Morgue, to uncover and understand their specific needs. In these easy consultations we observed first-hand how every procedure would be carried out, how the supporting equipment would be used, and probed to understand future needs.

In doing so, we helped the RCH team see that a wire cart or clinical procedure cart, for example, needn’t be thought of as separate line items, but as interrelated parts that can and should be thought of together.

This consultative approach enabled RCH to feel confident in every solution that we recommended. These solutions included:

  • A standardized suite of code response carts, all in adherence to regional regulations.
  • Fine tuned the configuration of all carts to ensure proper fit and prevent damage of the supplies they hold, such as finding the right drawer size to fit spinal kits, and ensuring catheter cabinets have sufficient height to accommodate catheter lengths.

“Thank you so much for your speedy response! (One reason we love working with Forsyth!)
