Case Study

Reducing infection rates while expanding capacity for the new Penticton Regional Hospital.

At Forsyth we’re driven by the belief that positive impact can happen in the simplest of spaces. For us, it’s not about dollars in the door, it’s about helping our clients reimagine what healthcare spaces can do for end-users: providers and their patients.

Background & Objective

Scaling up care.

With a main building that opened in 1953, PRH was planning for the addition of a new 6-story patient care tower to expand and modernize their capabilities. Upon learning that PRH’s Capital Planning team was in the process of developing specs for the new tower, we offered a no-commitment, on-site assessment to help with the specs, and things moved from there.

Challenges

Few hands, heavy work.

For a project as large as the development of a 6-story patient care tower, the procurement requirements are significant. Although they were very capable and dedicated, there were only two procurement staff members from PRH tasked with the mammoth job of evaluating what all departments needed and making sure each and every piece of equipment is configured properly for its application.

Solutions

Every detail, and none too small.

Given the PRH team’s capacity constraints, we led the entire product selection process thanks to our core expertise in cart and storage solutions, and our intimate knowledge of the products offered by multiple brands.

To do that, we designed solutions to help improve storage for clean and sterile supplies, and developed brand-neutral specs for all clinical procedure carts throughout the hospital. As always, our process involved deep consultation with every department, surveys of existing carts, and conversations with staff to understand what they liked, what they didn’t, and the conditions they expected for the future.

Some of our key activities and outcomes included:

  • Brought OR wire storage into full CSA compliance, reducing the rate of surgical infections.
  • Each cart fit its intended space perfectly thanks to our team’s attention detail and measuring against all architectural drawings.
  • To maximize end-user efficiency, we found that in certain cases—such as anesthesia carts—any new products should match the existing brand exactly.

“Forsyth has the flexibility to use any brand to complete the storage needs, where others may choose to stick with their brand and not be able to deliver the best storage solution.”
